The fourth match of IPL2020 was played at Sharjah Stadium in which Rajasthan Royals beat Chennai Super Kings by 16 runs to make a winning start in the league. Against a target of 217 given to Rajasthan, Chennai could only manage 200 runs in 20 overs. Thus, Dhoni's team, which defeated defending champions Mumbai Indians in the opening match, lost the match.
Faf du Plessis was the highest run scorer from Chennai with 72 runs. While MS Dhoni contributed 29 runs. Chennai had a good start as they faced a 217-run challenge. Shane Watts hit 33 off 21 balls with the help of 4 sixes and 1 four. Murali Vijay was then caught out by Tom Karan off Shreyas Gopal. He hit 21 off 21 balls with the help of 3 fours. The two shared a 56-run partnership for the first wicket. Sam Curran hit 17 off 6 balls with the help of 2 sixes and 1 four. Rituraj Gaekwad, who returned from corona to replace Rayudu in Chennai, got a place though he was bowled out for zero in his debut match. While Rajasthan had four foreign players, including captain Steve Smith, Tom Karan, David Miller and Joffra Archer. Kedar Jadhav was caught out for 22.
Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bowl against Rajasthan Royals. Dhoni said in the toss, "Ambati Rayudu is not 100% fit, so he is not playing. Other than that no other changes were made to the team. With the help of half-centuries from Sanju Samson (74) and Steven Smith (69), Rajasthan Royals scored 216 for 7 in 20 overs against Chennai Super Kings. Chennai were challenged for 217 runs to win.
