Dhyan Chand and Balbir Singh are entitled to 'Bharat Ratna': Ajit Pal Singh

New Delhi, Dt

India's legendary hockey players Major Dhyan Chand and Balbir Singh are entitled to receive the 'Bharat Ratna' award, said Captain Ajit Pal Singh, who won the 16th Hockey World Cup for India. "Dhyan Chand and Balbir Singh are the shining stars of Indian hockey," said Ajit Pal Singh. If Dhyan Chand is the father of Indian hockey, then Balbir Singh can be called the uncle of Indian hockey.

Balbir Singh, who has won three Olympic gold medals, died yesterday at the age of eight. Ajit Pas Singh said that the National Stadium was named after Dhyan Chand and his birthday is celebrated as National Sports Day. Thus Dhyan Chand was honored a little and Balbir Singh was never honored in proportion to his achievements. I believe that Dhyan Chand and Balbir Singh are the recipients of the Bharat Ratna Award. He is the national hero of the country and he has inspired many generations and still young players are getting ready by taking inspiration from him.

"Balbir Singh was a source of inspiration for all of us," said Ashok Kumar, Dhyan Chand's son and played a key role in helping India win the 12th Hockey World Cup. He and Dada Dhyan Chand cannot be compared. They were great players of their time. I think Balbir Singh was not given due respect.
