India and Russia have been declared joint winners after a series of dramatic and controversial events at the Chess Olympiad held online in the Corona epidemic. With this, India has won a gold medal for the first time in the history of Chess Olympiad. In the final round of the high-profile final between India and Russia, the internet connection of two Indian players was lost due to server failure and it was decided to give a silver medal to India instead of declaring these two players losers. However, recognizing the official protest by the Indian team, the FIDE reversed its decision and declared the two countries joint winners.
Former Multiple World Champion of India Vishwanathan Anand wrote on Twitter, 'We are the Champions !! Congress Russia! ' This is the first time India has reached the final of the Chess Olympiad. Notably, India's previous best performance in the Chess Olympiad was recorded in 2013, when India won a bronze medal. Due to the Corona epidemic, FIDE, the world's top chess body, hosted the first online chess Olympiad this year.
In the first round of the final, all six matches were drawn and both teams were tied 2-2. In the second round, two players of the Indian team, Nihal Sareen and Divya Deshmukh, were playing their matches when the internet connection was lost and they were declared losers. Against which India had lodged an official protest. In the previous semi-finals, India defeated Poland and Russia defeated the United States to reach the final.
