India's star cricketer Rohit Sharma, women's wrestler Vinesh Fogat, women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal, table tennis star Manika Batra and Paralympic gold medalist athlete Mariyappan Thangvelu have been awarded the country's highest sporting award this year - the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. While 8 players including Ishant Sharma have been recommended for the Arjuna Award.
On the recommendation of the 12-member committee of the Sports Ministry, the Sports Ministry will now formally affix the seal of approval. The awards will be presented to the players in a virtual ceremony on August 9, the country's national sports day. Major Dhyan Chand's birthday is celebrated as National Sports Day. Notably, the honor was conferred by the President at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on National Sports Day. However, due to Corona, a virtual ceremony is to be held this year.
A list of eight players including cricketer Ishant Sharma, archer Atanu Das, women's hockey player Deepika Thakur, kabaddi player Deepak Hooda and tennis player Divij Saran has been prepared for the Arjuna Award.
After Rohit Sharma, Tendulkar, Dhoni and Kohli, he will become the fourth Indian cricketer to receive the Khel Ratna award. For the first time in the history of the Khel Ratna award, five players will get this honor simultaneously. Earlier in the year 2012, badminton player P.V. Sindhu, wrestler Sakshi Malik, gymnast Deepa Karmakar and shooter Jitu Rai were jointly honored. Under the Khel Ratna award, a player is given a medal, a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 7.5 lakh. The Arjuna Award winner is awarded a citation, a bronze statue of Arjuna and a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh.
