Rani Rampal, Mariyappan and Manika Batra awarded Khel Ratna awards

President Ramnath Kovind presented awards to the country's athletes on the occasion of National Sports Day, the birth anniversary of hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand. The country's highest sporting award, the Khel Ratna, was presented to hockey team captain Rani Rampal, Paralympic gold medalist athlete Mariyappan and table tennis star Manika Batra in the first virtual ceremony held due to the Corona epidemic.

Women wrestler Vinesh Fogat and cricketer Rohit Sharma were also selected for the Khel Ratna award. However they were not able to attend the virtual ceremony. Vinesh is infected with corona. While Rohit Sharma has reached UAE to participate in IPL. The sports ministry instructed the award-winning athletes to virtually join the ceremony by arriving at the Sports Authority of India Center near their residence.

As many as 20 award winners were present at the event to honor the 6 sportspersons-coaches and sports greats who have made the Indian sports world proud at the national and international level. Five players received Khel Ratna and eight players received Arjuna Award. The players joined the ceremony from the Sports Authority of India's Centers in 11 states of the country.
