The name of hockey player Major Dhyanchand is written in golden letters on the pages of the glorious history of Indian hockey. Thus the success he achieved was during the slavery period of India but when the world did not know the skills of the Indians, it was not the British government but the name of the Indians that made him famous. When we learn about the famous Dhyan Chand as the Wizard of Hockey, the first thing that comes to mind is how he could have achieved such great success amidst so many conveniences and shortcomings.
Major Dhyan Chand, the magician of hockey, was a living example of the lack of strong will and courage in man. Games in Center Forward The players of the rival team were becoming helpless when this player started scoring goals with lightning. Hockey is a game of teamwork but Major Dhyanchand alone knows that the defeat of the rival team was written. That is why the Dhyan Chand era is considered to be the golden age of Indian hockey. The ball stuck like a magnet to the end of his hockey stick. All eyes were on Dhyan Chand when the rival team's pallu was heavy. This player had the ability to turn a losing bet into a victory if there was a sudden lightning strike. Therefore, the fear of Dhyan Chand was more on the opposing team.
His ability to run and score goals seemed divine, which is why hockey critics, critics, and players still admit that a hockey player like Dhyan Chand has never matured in the world. The place that Don Bradman has in cricket, and the place that Maradona has in football, will always be the place of Major Dhyanchand in hockey.
Today, August 29, is the birthday of Hockey's greatest magician. Born in 1905 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. Since his father served as a subedar in the British Army, he inherited the virtues of discipline. Father Someshwar Dutt had three children besides Dhyan Chand, Mulsinh and Rupsinh. Father Someshwar plays hockey at the local level from the army and does not pay to play hockey with him whenever he gets time from his job. Dhyan Chand did not have a place to study as his father had a job as a subedar in the British army.
Dhyan Chand could not take systematic education due to frequent migrations up to 6th standard. Eventually his family settled in the city of Jhansi in Madhya Pradesh for many years and then it became possible to study. Dhyan Chand was good at teaching but he loved to have fun with his friends. As a child, he used to play hockey with his classmates by cutting a tree branch and making a hockey stick out of wood. No good ground to play hockey or no money to buy a hockey stick. Dad was interested in the game of hockey, so hockey skills and understanding of the rules came from home.
Dhyan Chand also became interested in hockey following in his father's footsteps. Dhyan Chand joined the Punjab Regiment in 1922 as a sepoy as working was a financial necessity of the family. Bhole Tiwari, Subedar of the Brahmin Regiment, inspired Dhyanchand to move forward in the game of hockey by giving him guidance on the basic rules and skills of hockey. Hockey was guided by Bhole Tiwary but his first coach was Pankaj Gupta. Pankaj Gupta, judging by Dhyan Chand's interest, concentration and skill in the game of hockey, predicted that Dhyan Chand's name would continue to shine like the moon in the history of hockey. It is said that the name Dhyan Chand has been around ever since. Earlier, Dhyan Chand was known as Dhyan Singh.
Selected as a player for the International Hockey Team in 1926
Dhyan Chand was first selected as a member of the Indian hockey team that went to New Zealand in 1926. India won 18 of the 20 matches played between the two countries during the tour of New Zealand. Only 1 match was lost and 1 was drawn. The New Zealand team could not win a single match. Throughout the tournament, Indian players scored 192 goals, of which 100 were by Dhyan Chand alone. So the British promoted him from a sepoy to a lance hero. In 1927, 10 hockey tournaments were held between India and England as part of the Folkstone Festival. The Indian hockey team scored a total of 72 goals in the tournament, including 36 by Dhyan Chand.
Gold medals at three Olympics in Amsterdam, Los Angeles and Berlin
In the final match against the Netherlands for the gold medal at the Amsterdam Olympics in 1928, center forward Dhyan Chand did not allow the rival team to succeed in winning gold. The Netherlands hockey team was desperate for a win as it was a home match. In the end, India beat the Netherlands 3-0 with two unbeaten goals coming from Dhyan Chand's hockey. Dhyan Chand won the gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1932 by defeating the United States 24-0 in which Dhyan Chand scored 8 goals. When the Olympic record was broken in 2003, hockey fans remembered Major Dhyanchand, who took Indian hockey to the golden age.
The great magician of hockey announced his voluntary retirement at the age of 43. The Government of India conferred the rank of Major in the Army and honored him with the third highest civilian honor in the country. Major Dhyanchand retired from the Army in 1956 due to old age. After retiring he did a diploma in conch from the National Institute of Sport at Patiala. Although great magicians were not particularly successful in coaching because they had natural skills in hockey and thus coaching is a very different subject but it is so certain that Dhyan Chand's talents have influenced Indian hockey for decades. He is still an ideal source of inspiration for hockey players. Maradona and Pelનું's place in the game of football has been given to him by Major Dhyan Chand in hockey, so his fans still believe that Dhyan Chand should be honored with the Bharat Ratna. Getting Bharat Ratna to a great person like Dhyan Chand is like the adornment of an award.
Dhyan Chand's entire family was dedicated to the game of hockey
Someshwar Dutt, the father of the great hockey wizard, played hockey in the army. His brother Rup Singh was also a member of the Olympicus Indian hockey team in 1932 and 1936. After Dhyan Chand's retirement, his son Ashok Kumar also made a name for himself as a successful Indian hockey player. Participated as a hockey player at the 1972 World Olympics in Munich and the 1976 Material. According to hockey critics, Ashok Kumar also believed in playing in an aggressive style like his father. In the 1975 World Cup final in Malaysia, Ashok Kumar Singh scored the only goal in India's 1.0 win over Malaysia. Since then, India has not yet won a gold medal.
