Congress convenes meeting on Monday in preparation for nationwide agitation against agricultural bills

New delhi date. 19 September 2020, Saturday

After encircling the government in Parliament on the issue of agricultural bills brought by the Central Government, the Congress is now strategizing for a nationwide agitation. The party has called a big meeting on Monday to take it up. The meeting, to be held at the Congress headquarters at 4 pm on Monday, will be attended by members of Sonia Gandhi's support committee, each general secretary and the state in-charge. This is the first meeting of Congress central office bearers after the reshuffle at the top level.

According to sources, party president Sonia Gandhi, who has gone abroad for treatment, has given instructions. Rahul Gandhi is also with him to take care of his mother Sonia Gandhi.

The Congress had made a strategy to oppose these bills in Parliament but after the manner in which the government has surrounded these bills, the Congress has decided to hold demonstrations across the country. The Congress finds the issue beneficial in both ways as all the farmers' organizations are opposing it, while the Modi government's allies in the NDA such as the Akali Dal are also opposing it. Not only that, the Indian Farmers Union, which is affiliated to the Sangh, is also calling it anti-farmer.

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have accused the Modi government of helping businessmen through these bills. Amid heated politics over agriculture bills, the Congress will shake up the Modi government on Monday, where Priyanka Gandhi will also be present as general secretary. It remains to be seen how the Congress will get on the road in the midst of the Corona epidemic and the big question is who will take responsibility for this campaign?

Earlier, in the first term of the Modi government, the Congress, led by Rahul Gandhi, had strongly opposed the attempt to change the land acquisition law and had succeeded in pushing the government on its backfoot. Some similar efforts are being seen by the Congress again.

All the three bills introduced by the Modi government in the name of agricultural reform have been passed in the Lok Sabha. But farmers in Punjab and Haryana are protesting. Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur has resigned from the Modi cabinet in view of farmers' grievances. However the government is saying that these bills have been brought to benefit the farmers. Opposition parties, including the Congress, have been protesting.
