World number one Serbian tennis star Djokovic and clay court King Nadal made a triumphant start at the French Open. In the first round match, Djokovic defeated Sweden's M. Wymer 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets. Nadal advanced to the second round after beating Belarus' Igor Jerasimov 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in a late night match. However, fourth seed Daniel Medvedev of Russia was defeated in the first round by Fuskovich of Italy 6-6, 6-6 (7-6), 6-4, 6-1.
Carne Busta of Spain defeated John Millman of Australia 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in the Grand Slam Championship which started at Red Clay. Germany's Struff upset the United States by beating Tiafo 6-4, 6-7 (6-7), 6-7, 6-7 (6-4), 6-4. Bubik of Kazakhstan upset eighth seed Joel Monfils of France 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.
South Africa's Kevin Andersen defeated Serbia's Darren 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. Seventh seed Barantini of Italy defeated Vassel Pospisil of Canada 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.
Carolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, the second seed in the women's singles, turned the tide on Egypt's Mayer Sheriff's intentions after a fierce 6-2 (6-11), 6-4, 6-2 fight. Fourth-seeded Sofia Kenny of the United States defeated Samsonova of Russia 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Former Spanish champion Muguruza defeated Slovenia's Zidansek 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.
