Naomi Osaka, a 6-year-old Japanese tennis player, defeated former Belarusian world number one Victoria Azarenka 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the three-set final to win the US Open women's singles title. With this, Osaka has become the first player in Asia to win three Grand Slam singles titles. He had earlier won the US Open in 2012 and the Australian Open in 2016.
Azarenka lost for the third time after reaching the final of the US Open. He had earlier lost to Serena Williams of the United States in the 2016 and 2017 finals. In the final of the US Open women's singles, which was played between Corona in an empty stadium and amid strict rules of bio-bubble, Azarenka got off to an aggressive start, taking a 6-1, 6-0 lead at one stage. However, she could not hold on to the match and Osaka apparently played with aggressive form after warming up in the opening 20 minutes of the match and won the title by winning the second and third sets.
For the first time in the five-year history of the US Open final, the player who lost the first set became the champion. The last such achievement was made by Sanchez Vicario of Spain in the 19th. With this victory, Osaka also set a record as the most successful singles Grand Slam winner in Asia, surpassing Li Na of China, who had won two Grand Slams. Amid the Corona epidemic, a number of veteran women players, including world number one Ashley Barty and top-10 Romania's Simona Halep, did not participate in the US Open.
