Dominic Thiem of Austria advanced to the semifinals of the US Open men's singles by defeating young Australian Day Minar 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. He also became the first Austrian tennis player to reach the semi-finals of the US Open. He will now face third-seeded Medvedev of Russia in the semifinals, who defeated 10th-ranked Rublov 6-2 (6-7), 6-4, 6-6 (7-6) in the All-Russian quarterfinals.

Federer is also out of the tournament with defending champion Nadal and Djokovic has been knocked out by default, while Thiem is currently considered a favorite. However, in the semi-finals, he is up against a young Russian, Medvedev, who entered the final last year and became the runner-up after losing to Nadal.

Medvedev and Rublov were held to a draw in the high-profile quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows. In the first set tiebreaker, Medvedev was trailed 1-2 at one stage. However, he went on to win seven of the next eight points. Even in the third and final set, Medvedev won the match by two points in a row at the crucial stage.

Veteran American Serena Williams advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Bulgaria's Pironkova in the quarterfinals. Williams has reached the semi-finals of the US Open for the 11th year in a row, where he will face Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. He defeated Alice Martens of Belgium 6-1, 6-0. This is Azarenka's first Grand Slam semi-final in seven years. He has won four matches and lost 13 against Serena.
