World number one Serbian tennis star Djokovic advanced to the third round of the men's singles at the French Open Grand Slam by defeating Lithuania's Barancis 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets. Along with Djokovic, Zverev and Basta also went on to win their respective matches. However, Denis Shapovalov of Canada and Nishikori of Japan were knocked out of the tournament with unexpected defeats in the second round. Defending champion Romanian Simona Halep, Canin of the United States and Kvitova of the Czech Republic also continued their winning streak.
Djokovic won the French Open Grand Slam on Red Clay, but lost to Canada's Shapovalov after a five-hour struggle. He was defeated by Spain's Carbales Bayena 6-4, 6-7 (6-4), 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Spain's Busta defeated Argentina's Guillermo Pella 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, Bulgaria's Dimitrov beat Serbia's Martin 6-4, 6-6 (7-6), 6-1 and Russia's Khachanov defeated Czech Republic's Jiri Wesley. Defeated by 6 (7-8), 6-7 (6-7), 6-7 (7-8).
Germany's Zverev defeated France's Herbetti 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 (6-4), 6-4, 6-4 in a four-hour battle yesterday. Italy's Travaglia beat Japan's Nishikori 6-4, 6-3, 6-6 (7-6), 6-4, 6-4 in 3 hours and 3 minutes to advance to the third round.
Defending champion women's singles champion Simona Halep defeated Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu 6-3, 6-3. Fourth-seeded Sofia Canine of the United States defeated Bogden of Romania 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. Former champion Ostapenko of Latvia caused a major upset by beating second seed Pliskova 6-4, 6-2. Quitova of the Czech Republic defeated Paolini of Italy 6-4, 6-3.
