Mumbai, Ta. 12 June 2022, Sunday
The auction for media rights for the next 5 years, i.e. 2023-2027, for the world's largest T-20 cricket tournament has started. BCCI is conducting e-auction of media rights for the Indian Premier League for the period 2023-2027. The auction in Mumbai is likely to last for more than 2-3 days.
The IPL will see 74 games in each season and the number is likely to increase to 94 in the last two seasons. The current value of IPL media rights for TV and digital platforms is Rs 16,347.50 crore. Star India bought the rights in September 2017 after beating Sony Pictures.
Viacom18 TV, owned by Reliance Industries Ltd along with Star and Sony Networks, is considered a strong contender for both the TV and digital space.
In the past, media rights were sold simultaneously, ranging from TV to digital rights. Following the proliferation of digital media, BCCI has decided to sell the rights in 4 different packages instead of a single package to the benefit of the board to the tune of crores. A total of 4 special packages have started e-auctions for 74 games in each season for a period of 5 years from the year 2023-2027 and there is a provision to increase the number of matches in the last two years to 94.
BCCI hopes to earn a further Rs 12,000 to 12,500 crore above its combined base price of Rs 32,440 crore, which could take its valuation to Rs 45,000 crore.
This is an e-auction in which companies can simultaneously raise their bids by Rs 50 crore. E-auction is a transparent but time consuming process.
List of companies involved in e-auction
Viacom18's joint venture with Lupa Systems (Uday Shankar and James Murdoch), Walt Disney (Star), Zee, Sony (both, Indian Media and Digital Rights). Times Internet, Fan Code, FunAsia, Dream 11 (Digital Rights Only)
