Surprise in IPL media rights: Sony wins bid

Sony has won the next five years of television rights for the IPL, the world's largest cricket franchise, beating giants like Jio and Disney. According to reports, Sony has won the Indian Premier League (IPL) bid for TV and digital rights.

According to Cricbuzz, the media rights of IPL have been sold. TV rights have been sold for Rs 57.5 crore and digital rights for Rs 48 crore. Sony has won these rights for the next 5 years.

Previously, IPL TV and digital rights were held by Disney-owned Star India.

According to reports, Sony has won the Rs 43,050 crore bid for just two categories at the end of the first day of the e-auction for the media rights for the next five years of the high-profile IPL.

For the IPL season from 206 to 206, there was a cut-throat competition between the top companies for TV broadcasting in India and digital rights in the Indian subcontinent. According to the auction bid, the board is almost certain to earn a total of Rs 108 crore from TV and digital rights in India and the subcontinent alone in the current scenario through an IPL match in the next five years.

The current bid is three times higher than the amount paid by Star to the board for the rights of 2012-13.

Different categories of IPL media rights:

The media rights of the IPL are divided into four sections. These include the TV rights of the Indian subcontinent, the digital rights of the Indian subcontinent, the digital rights of the 16 play-offs and the TV-media rights of foreign markets. The rights race includes Reliance as well as Disney Star, Sony and Zeno. The next three seasons of the IPL will be played 3-4 matches while bids are being made for 2-3 matches in the last two seasons.


Significantly, the base price of TV rights in India is Rs 3 crore per match, which reached Rs 2 crore on the first day. While the base price for India's digital rights is Rs 3 crore per match, which has reached Rs 3 crore. And Package D has set a base price of Rs 3 crore for TV-media rights in foreign markets. The C and D categories will be decided only after the first two categories are decided.
