Dhawan's 97: India challenged Windies to 309 to win the first ODI

With the help of captain Dhawan's 99-ball innings of 97 runs and Gill (64) and Shreyas Iyer's (54) half-centuries, India registered 308 runs for seven wickets in the first ODI against West Indies. At one stage, India seemed to be going for a score of around 350. However, India's run rate was reduced as the Windies bowlers fought back overwhelmingly.

West Indies captain Puran won the toss and put India into bat first. Dhawan and Gill's partnership of 119 runs off 105 balls gave the team a solid start. Gill scored 64 runs off 53 balls with 6 fours and two sixes. He became a victim of pearl theft. After which Dhawan was joined by Shreyas Iyer. He shared 94 runs in 97 balls in the second wicket.

Dhawan was inching towards a century , but Moti-Kanhai kept him short of a century by just three runs. He was caught out by Burks for 97 off 99 balls with 10 fours and 3 sixes. Shreyas scored 54 runs in 57 balls with 5 fours and two sixes. At one stage, when India lost the third wicket in 35.5 overs, the score was 230/3. However, after that India lost wickets at regular intervals and West Indies improved the situation.

Gudakesh Moti-Kanhai and Alzari Joseph took 2 wickets each.
