Olympic golden superstar Neeraj Chopra created history by winning the silver medal for India in the men's javelin throw event at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Eugene, USA. Neeraj won silver with a throw of 88.13 meters. With this, India won the silver medal for the first time in the 46-year history of the World Championship. When India got a medal after 19 years in World Athletics. Long jumper Anju Bobby George won bronze at the 2003 Paris World Championships , India's only medal in world athletics so far.
Neeraj created a unique history in Tokyo by bringing India the first gold medal in the history of athletics at the Olympics. Now he also registered his name in the record book as the first silver medalist for India in World Athletics. Participating in the World Championship final for the first time in his career, Neeraj's first throw was a foul. However , he threw a best of 88.13 meters in his subsequent third and overall fourth attempt. Neeraj's staunch rival and defending champion Anderson Peters of Granada achieved a distance of 90.21 meters in the very first throw. He won the gold medal with a best throw of 90.54 meters in the fifth and final throw. While Indian Army jawan Neeraj had to settle for silver , which was also becoming a landmark success in Indian athletics. Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch got the bronze medal with a throw of 88.09 meters.
In javelin throw, each competitor gets six throws and the best performance is considered. Neeraj fouled three of his six attempts. Significantly, Neeraj won the historic gold medal in the javelin throw event with a throw of 87.58 meters in the Tokyo Olympics held last year. Grenada's world champion Anderson Peters was also in the event , though he failed to qualify for the final with a throw of 80.42m.
