Former National Selection Committee Chairman Krishnamachari Srikanth has said that all-rounder Hardik Pandya should be appointed full-time captain before the T20 World Cup to be held in 2024.
India should begin the process of rebuilding the team with the series against New Zealand. India were knocked out in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, where they were beaten by defending champions England by 10 wickets. This is India's fifth knockout loss in six World Cups.
Srikanth, who opened the 1983 World Cup champion team, said, 'If I were the chairman of the selection committee, I would have said that Hardik Pandya should be the captain for the 2024 World Cup. The process of rebuilding the team should begin today. This work should start with the New Zealand series which starts in a week.
Srikanth said, 'You have to start from today. To prepare for the World Cup you have to understand things and start preparing for it two years in advance. So whatever you want to do, be it some kind of experiment or something else you have to do it within 1 year. You have to prepare the team by 2023 and make sure that the team will play in the World Cup 2023.
India will play three T20 Internationals and the same number of ODIs in the series against New Zealand starting on Friday. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya will lead the team in the shorter format.
Former India captain Srikanth said that India will have to find more fast bowling all-rounders before the 2024 World Cup. You look at the 1983 World Cup, the 2011 World Cup and the 2007 T20 World Cup.
Why we won this was because, we had more fast bowling all-rounders and some players who could bowl with the bat. So identify such players in which players like Deepak Hooda will have many other players.
Former cricketer Irfan Pathan said that India should not depend on only one captain and should have several players in the team to lead.
Irfan said, 'I am not saying that if you change the captain, the result can also change. This way you cannot change the result. In case of Hardik Pandya, you have to understand, he is a fast bowling all-rounder and he has injuries too. If you don't have another player to lead, it will be difficult.
Former captain and coach of Team India Anil Kumble believes that to progress in international cricket, there should be a completely different limited overs and Test format team.
Kumble said, 'Definitely you need different teams. You need T20 experts. I think this England team has shown and the last T20 World Cup champions Australia have also shown that you have to have as many all-rounders as possible. You pay attention to their batting order. Today Liam Livingstone comes to bat at number seven. No other team has a batsman like Livingstone at number seven. Marcus Stoinis is batting at number six from Australia. You have to prepare such a team.
