The Indian squad for the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup to be held in Odisha has been announced. The FIH Men's Hockey World Cup has been organized in Odisha from January 13 next year and 18 members of the Indian team have been announced for this. Defender Harmanpreet Singh has been made the captain of the Indian team. Defender Amit Rohidasan has been made the vice captain of the team. Harmanpreet also captained the team in the recent series against Australia in which India lost 1-4. Manpreet Singh, the captain of the Indian team who earlier won a historic bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics, will play in the team as a player. Coach Graham Reid was in favor of handing over the captaincy to different players to build a leadership team at senior level.
The team was selected based on current form
The World Cup squad has been selected after a two-day trial at the SAI Center in Bengaluru. The squad has a mix of young and experienced players, who will be eyeing to end India's long wait in the World Cup. Gurjant Singh and Dilpreet Singh, who were part of the Tokyo Olympic team, are not in the main squad but will remain as standbys. A selector of Hockey India said that the team has been selected based on the current form and performance. No other criteria were kept. Krishan B Pathak and PR Sreejesh will be the goalkeepers. This is Sreejesh's fourth World Cup and third time on Indian soil. Captain Harmanpreet will lead the defence, while vice-captains Rohidas, Surender Kumar, Varun Kumar, Jarmanpreet Singh and Neelam Sanjeep Sess will accompany him.
The Indian team will play the first match against Spain
Apart from this, the midfield will have Vivek Sagar Prasad, Manpreet, Hardik Singh, Neelkant Sharma, Shamsher Singh and Akashdeep Singh. In the front row will be Mandeep Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, Abhishek and Sukhjit Singh. The two alternates will be Rajkumar Pal and Jugraj Singh. The Indian team will play their first match against Spain on January 13 at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela. He has to play the second match against England at this ground, followed by the third match against Wales in Bhubaneswar.
