Sania Mirza's Grand Slam career ends with Australian Open runners-up trophy

Melbourne, dated 27

India's top tennis star Sania Mirza ended her Grand Slam career with the runners-up trophy in the Australian Open mixed doubles. The former world number one doubles pair of Sania and Bopanna lost to Brazilian Stephanie-Matos in straight sets 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in the Australian Open mixed doubles final. Sania is set to retire from professional tennis this year and this was the last Grand Slam tournament of her career.

In the final played at the Rod Laver Arena, Sania-Bopanna lost after an hour and 27 minutes of struggle. Coincidentally, the first doubles Grand Slam of Sania's career was the Australian Open mixed doubles. Which he won with India's Mahesh Bhupathi.

Sania was moved to tears while thanking her fans. He said that my career journey started from Melbourne in the year 2005. At the age of 18, I played against Serena in the third round. I then got the chance to come back here and played and won some memorable finals. The Rod Laver Arena holds a special place in my career. There couldn't have been a better arena to end my career.

Sania added, "I never thought that I would get a chance to play a Grand Slam final in the presence of my son." My parents are also present here. These tears of mine are not of love, but of happiness.
