Apart from family, Dhoni is the only person who has known me closely': Virat Kohli

New delhi date. 25 February 2023 Saturday

Former Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli has once again spoken about his relationship with Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Everyone knows about the friendship between the two players and the two have won many matches together for the country but even after retiring from international cricket, Dhoni's support has been very helpful for Kohli.

Virat Kohli talks about his relationship with Dhoni and quitting the captaincy in the 10th episode of the second season of his IPL team RCB's podcast. Kohli said, I have experienced a different way in my career now. It has been a long time since I have felt as relaxed as I have while playing cricket.

Virat Kohli has played 106 Tests, 271 ODIs and 115 T20Is for India in a career spanning 15 years and has scored over 25000 international runs. Talking about his bad times, he said, "The interesting thing is that apart from Anushka, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the only person who gave me strength during this whole time. Anushka has been with me all this time and has seen me very closely to see what I have experienced. The kind of things that have happened, apart from my childhood coach and family... the only person who actually got close to me, is MS Dhoni."

Kohli shared the dressing room with Dhoni for 11 years during his stint with Team India between 2008 and 2019. About Dhoni, he said, he spoke to me and you can probably contact him. But if I call them on any given day, there is a 99 percent chance that they won't pick up the phone, because they don't look at the phone. So it was special for him to talk to me. Twice now he told me, when you are expected to be strong and you are seen as a strong man, different people forget to ask how are you?

Virat Kohli joined Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2008 and became the captain of the team in 2011. He stepped down from this role in 2021. He said of Dhoni, "His words were important to me because I have always seen him as someone who is very confident, very mentally strong who can take any situation and find a way and show us the way." . What you experience is that at any point in life as a human being you need to take some steps back. It is important to understand what is good for you.

There aren't many people who have played that long. As strong individuals they can go and explain in a way that the other person can understand. So I mentioned this particular incident because MS Dhoni knows what is actually happening. They understand this because they have been there themselves.

Kohli said, He has experienced what I am experiencing now. So this is beyond just experiencing and experiencing those emotions in that moment is the only way you can actually be kind and understanding to another person who is going through that.

Apart from talking about his relationship with Dhoni in the podcast, Virat Kohli also elaborated on his stint as captain of India and RCB, his thoughts on stepping down from the captaincy and taking on the role of a senior player and maintaining that atmosphere.
