Ahmedabad: The 16th season of IPL will begin tomorrow at the Narendra Modi Stadium here in the presence of more than one lakh spectators. The first match this time will be played between the defending champions Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings from 7-30 pm. 74 matches will be played and the final will be played in Ahmedabad on May 28.
It has rained in some areas of Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar today and the ground staff had to come down to cover the pitch in the evening at the stadium. Organizers and fans are worried as rain is forecast for tomorrow as well.

If we look at the records of IPL, Mumbai Indians have become the champion five times, Chennai four times, Kolkata twice and Rajasthan, Hyderabad, Deccan, Gujarat Titans have become champions 1 time each.
Mumbai once, Chennai five times, Kolkata, Rajasthan, Hyderabad, Punjab, Delhi, Pune have become runners up once each. Bangalore has become runners up 3 times.
Bangalore have had players like Gayle, de Villiers and Kohli but they have never been champions, similarly Punjab and Delhi have not won the title even though they have participated in all the IPLs.
Ten teams in the field
Ten teams are participating in the IPL this time including Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants.
Home-away format
Due to Corona, the 'Home and Away' format was not possible, but starting from this year, each team will play one match at their home ground and the other at the opponent's ground.
Organized in 12 cities
Last year all the matches were played in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune. This time IPL will also be held in 12 cities.
Assam's Barasawara Stadium will be the first IPL matches to be played, they will host some Rajasthan Royals matches. After ten years, Dharamsala has again been allocated IPL matches.
Entry of new rules
This time IPL will be played with new rules. The captain will announce his team after the toss.
A player who is not in the announced playing eleven will be dropped as an impact player if necessary in the ongoing match. Apart from this, team wide and no ball can also ask for 'DRS' i.e. review. A penalty of five runs will be imposed if the fielder or wicketkeeper makes any movement that violates the rules.
