Even before the start of IPL 2023, the news of Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's retirement was coming. Cricket experts were saying that this could be Dhoni's last IPL season as a player. Dhoni may not have been able to bat much this season due to a knee injury, but he has scored 100 out of 100 numbers in the captaincy. Dhoni's team has neither a stylish batsman nor an experienced bowler, but still he has led the team to the finals thanks to his spectacular captaincy. Now fans are demanding that Dhoni should play IPL for next few years. Even if it is as an impact player. But India's former World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev has a slightly different opinion on this matter. Kapil Dev says Dhoni played cricket for 15 years and we can't see him playing all his life. We should be thankful that he played for us for so many years.
Dhoni should be thanked - Kapil Dev
Talking about Dhoni, Kapil Dev said that he has been playing IPL for 15 years. Why are we only talking about Dhoni? He has done his job. What more do we need from him now? Do we want him to play for life? It's not going to happen. Instead we should be thankful that he played cricket for 15 years. He further said that whether he plays next year or not, he has put in an impressive performance before leaving. He may not have scored big runs, but he took the team to the final and this shows the importance of a captain in cricket.
Cricket veterans have different opinions about Dhoni
When asked about Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings bowling coach Dwayne Bravo said that he is 100 percent sure that Dhoni will play next year. However, veteran cricketers have a different opinion about this. Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag believes that the impact player rule will not apply to players like Dhoni. He said that this rule applies to players who are not fielding a batsman or a bowler not batting. Sehwag said Dhoni needs to be in the 20-over field as he runs the game well as a captain.
What did Dhoni say about retirement?
Talking to Harsha Bhogle after the match, Dhoni said about retirement that I still have 8 to 9 months to take a decision. I will stay with CSK. I was out of the house since January. I started practice in March, now let's see what happens. The auction will be held in December, so he is not thinking much about it.
