Chess World Cup 2023: Pragyanananda's dream shattered, defeat in tiebreaker against five-time world champion Carlson

Five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway defeated 18-year-old Grandmaster Rameshbabu Pragnanananda of India in the first tie-breaker of the FIDE World Cup Finals to win the title. The winner of the World Cup was decided by a tiebreaker today, with Karlsson winning the first 25 minutes of quick play. The second game ended in a draw and Magnus Carlsen went on to win the World Cup.

Youngest player to play in a World Cup final
India's 18-year-old Pragyanananda defeated world number three Fabiano Caruana in a tiebreak in the semi-finals on Monday to reach the final. Significantly, Pragyanananda has confirmed his place in the Candidates Tournament 2024. He became the third youngest player to reach the prestigious tournament after Carlson and Bobby Fischer. He will be the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to play in Candidates. He is also the youngest player to play in a World Cup final.
