You may have seen referees using red cards and yellow cards on the football field, but have you ever seen an umpire doing the same on a cricket field? Probably not. A red card was used in the Caribbean Premier League which was the first such incident in a game of cricket. Due to this red card, Pollard's team had to play with 10 players. Sunil Narine faced a red card for the first time.
Pollard's team was shown a red card
No fan on the cricket field would have imagined that he would get a chance to see rules like football in this game. Pollard-led Knight Riders were shown a red card by the umpire after the 19th over for a slow over rate in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League in the West Indies. Due to this red card, Pollard had to play with 10 players and Sunil Narine had to leave the field due to this red card. It is worth mentioning that the red card rule has been implemented in the current season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
What is the slow over rate rule in CPL?
If the team finds itself behind the required over rate at the start of the 18th over, the team will need to place one more fielder inside the 30-yard circle. After this there will be total 5 players in the circle. If a team is found guilty of a slow over rate at the start of the 19th over, they must place two extra fielders in the 30-yard circle instead of one. In such a situation, a total of 6 players will be in the 30-yard circle and if the team is behind the fixed over rate at the start of the 20th over, the team will have to keep 6 players in the 30-yard circle and the captain will have to keep one fielder off the field. Apart from this, the batting team will also have the responsibility to advance the match quickly. If the batsmen slow down the game, the umpire will warn them first, if even after this they are found to be wasting time, the team is fined 5 runs.
