Nathan Lyon has become the first spinner to take 10 wickets on New Zealand soil since 2006. This is the first time since 2006 that a spinner has taken 10 wickets in a single Test match on New Zealand soil. Earlier in December 2006, New Zealand's Daniel Vettori took 10 wickets against Sri Lanka. Muttiah Muralitharan also took 10 wickets in the same match.

New Zealand lost at home against Australia after 8 years

The New Zealand team had to face a crushing defeat in the first Test at home against Australia. After winning the toss and deciding to bowl first, Cameron Green played an unbeaten innings of 174 runs and gave Australia a strong hold in the match. The team scored 383 runs in the first innings. Nathan Lyon took 4 wickets and broke the back of New Zealand's batting. With the help of Glenn Phillips' 71 runs, the New Zealand team reached 179 runs. Australia's huge lead of 204 runs in the first innings put the Kiwi team on the back foot.

After batting brilliantly in the first innings, Glen Phillip also showed strength in bowling and took 5 wickets to dismiss Australia for 164 runs and brought New Zealand back into the match. After flopping in the first innings, the Kiwi batsmen failed in the second innings as well. Rachin Ravindra struggled single-handedly and scored 59 runs but it was not enough. Lyon took 6 wickets in the second innings for Australia.

A quick 10 wickets for Lyon

Australia's veteran spinner Nathan Lyon showed his tremendous bowling power in the first innings, followed by an impressive performance in the second innings as well. He took a total of 6 wickets by giving away 65 runs in 27 overs while bowling. In the first innings, Lyon took 4 wickets for 43 runs in 8.1 overs. This experienced spinner who took 10 wickets in both the innings made the team win the match.
