No intention to terminate IPL title sponsorship deal with Vivo: BCCI

New Delhi, Thursday 19 June 2020

Amid protests across the country over Chinese products, the BCCI has made it clear that it will not cancel its contract with IPL sponsor Vivo.

The BCCI said it was ready to review its sponsorship policy for the foreseeable future but had no intention of canceling the contract with current IPL title sponsor Vivo.

At the same time, Arun Dhumal, treasurer of the board, says that money is coming from a Chinese company in the IPL, which is benefiting the country, not China.

Violent scuffles and tensions between the two countries in Galwan on the Indo-China border in Ladakh have led to an anti-China atmosphere in the country.

More than four decades later, at least 50 Indian soldiers have been killed in violence on the Indo-China border. Since then the demand for a boycott of Chinese products has been increasing.

Dhumal said the country is benefiting from the sponsorship of Chinese companies in Indian tournaments like the IPL. BCCI receives Rs 50 crore a year from Vivo, whose five-year contract will expire in 203.

"Talking in a hurry leaves logic behind," Dhumal said. We have to understand whether we are talking about the cooperation of a Chinese company in the interest of China or whether we are getting help from Chinese companies in the interest of India.

"While we allow Chinese companies to sell products in India, whatever rupee they are taking from Indian consumers, many BCCIs are giving to promote the brand and the board is also paying 5 per cent tax to the Indian government," he said.

Which is benefiting India, not China. Until September last year, mobile company Oppo was the sponsor of the Indian team, but then Bangalore-based start-up Baiju replaced the Chinese company.

Dhumal said he was in favor of reducing reliance on Chinese products, but there was nothing wrong with sponsoring Indian brands like the IPL as long as they were allowed to do business in India.
