Stavanger (Norway) , dt
Norway's world champion Magnus Carlos won the championship for the fifth time in the classic event of the Norwegian chess tournament held at home. Azerbaijan's Mamedyarov was in second place. He was one point behind Carlson. In the final bout, 6-year-old Vishwanathan Anand of India defeated 5-year-old Aryan Tarry of Norway in Armageddon (Sudden Death). However, Anand was third with 12.5 points.
The final round was going to be extremely interesting. The difference between Carlson and second-place finisher Mamedyarov was only half a point. The match between Carlson and Topalov was a draw. Carlson then won the Armjeddon match. In such a situation, Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan could have become the champion if he had won against Rajabov of his own country. Although Rajabow was on the verge of defeat , he drew the match rather than make a strong comeback. Rajabov eventually won the Armageddon bout and Mamedyarov lost the title. Carlos won for the fourth time in a row in the 10th Norway Chess Classic and for the fifth time overall.
