The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approved a new rule in T20 cricket. Under this rule now not only 11 but more players can get a chance to play in the team. However, this rule is similar to football and hockey in that substitute players are given a chance.
Something similar will happen under this rule but the only difference will be that this rule will apply only for 14 overs in each innings. After that the player cannot be replaced. This rule can be implemented in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for testing. This rule is similar to the super-sub rule introduced in international cricket some time ago.
Will this rule apply in IPL 2023?
This rule is named 'Impact Player'. This rule is also used in the Big Bash League called X Factor where a maximum of 13 players can play.
It is also being said that if the rule is successfully tested in domestic cricket tournaments and proves to be successful, it may be implemented in next year's IPL 2023 as well.
The BCCI has sent a circular to all states, saying, "In view of the growing popularity of T20 cricket, preparations are underway to introduce something new." This can make the format more interesting for the fans as well as the players and teams.
What will be the new rules?
According to the new rule given in this circular, 'At the time of toss, the captain has to give the playing-11, along with the names of 4 other players have to be changed. Any one of these four players can be replaced by a player included in the playing-11 under the 'Impact Player' rule.'
Any player used as an 'Impact Player' will play the match. A player excluded from the playing-11 cannot play. A player cannot be used during break time or fielding in a match.
The team will definitely benefit from this, if a bowler is included as an 'Impact Player' he will bowl his full 4 overs. How many overs bowled or not bowled by the dismissed bowler will not affect the 'Impact Player'.
The batting team has to use the impact player only at the fall of wicket or during the innings break.
However, one thing the team, captain or management has to keep in mind is that they have to inform the field umpire or the fourth umpire before using the 'Impact Player' rule.
According to this BCCI rule, during a match, both teams can use an 'Impact Player' before the 14th over of the innings. That is, after this this rule will not be used.
If a player is injured and the team substitutes an impact player, the injured player will not be part of the rest of the match. The impact player is to be used only at the end of that over.
At the same time, using this rule will not be mandatory and it will be up to the teams whether they want to use it or not.
