Three athletes won gold, silver and bronze medals in one week, learn about them on sports day

The last week of August has been a memorable one in sports for India. The country bagged three separate medals in major tournaments in three different sports. Due to which National Sports Day has become special. Sports Day is celebrated on August 29 every year in the country on the birth anniversary of hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand. Ahead of Dhyan Chand's 118th birth anniversary, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, young chess star Pragyanananda and badminton veteran HS Prannoy gave the country a chance to celebrate Sports Day in a week by showing brilliant performances.
Neeraj created history
Neeraj Chopra, known as India's Golden Boy, performed brilliantly in the World Athletics Championships. He created history on August 27 in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Neeraj won the gold medal in javelin throw competition. He became the country's first athlete to win gold at the World Athletics Championships. Neerj won the gold medal in the javelin throw event at the Budapest National Athletics Center with a throw of 88.17 meters. The Olympic, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Diamond League champion had not only won a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships before this tournament, but now he has a gold medal to his credit. Last time, Neeraj won the silver medal in the world championship.
Pragyanananda won the silver at the age of 18
On August 24, 18-year-old chess player Rameshbabu Pragyanananda won everyone's hearts. He won a silver medal in the Chess World Cup. He may have lost to World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the final, but he hopes to win the tournament many times in the future. After playing in the final of the Chess World Cup, Pragyanananda became the third youngest player after veterans Bobby Fischer and Carlson to qualify for the Candidates tournament.
Started playing chess at the age of three
Pragyanananda became a Grandmaster at the age of 12. He was born on 10 August 2005 in Chennai. He started playing chess at the age of three. Pragyanananda's father Rameshbabu works in a bank. Despite suffering from polio, he did not lose heart and nurtured the children well. Pragyanananda's elder sister Vaishali also loved to play chess and it was only after seeing her that Pragyanananda started playing chess. His mother accompanies him on every journey. Family and love have made him famous all over the world today.
HS Prannoy's first medal in World Badminton Championships
India's veteran badminton player HS Prannoy won the bronze medal in the single event at the World Badminton Championships 2023. He did not make it to the finals. In the semifinals played on 26 August, he lost to Thailand's Kunlawat Witidsaran. Even after this defeat, Prannoy won the bronze. Prannoy has managed to win a medal in the World Badminton Championship for the first time.
The fifth Indian to win a medal at the World Championships
Prannoy became the fifth Indian men's singles player to win a medal at the World Championships. Earlier, Kidambi Srikanth (Silver), Lakshya Sen (Bronze), B Sai Praneeth (Bronze) and Prakash Padukone (Bronze) have won medals in Men's Singles. Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu won five medals including a gold in 2019 in singles at the World Championships. Apart from her, Saina Nehwal won two medals (silver and bronze). The women's doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa won the bronze medal in 2011 and Satviksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the bronze last year.
