Indian Chess Grandmaster Rameshbabu Pragyanananda had a strong performance in the finals of the FIDE World Cup Chess Tournament. The first classical match of the final was played yesterday, with Pragyanananda holding world number one Magnus Carlsen to a draw. India's 18-year-old grandmaster produced an impressive performance against a much more experienced and higher-ranked player and convinced Carlsen to force the match to a draw after 35 moves.
Defeated World No. 3 in the semifinals
In the second game of two classical matches today, Karlsson will start with the white piece and be in an advantageous position. Pragyanananda defeated world number three Fabiano Caruana 3.5-2.5 in the semi-finals to reach the final. Pragyanananda is the second Indian player after the legendary Viswanathan Anand to make it to the World Cup final. He has also qualified for the Candidates Tournament to be held in the year 2024. Pragyanananda had a historic win in the semi-finals as well. After the two-match classical series ended in a 1-1 draw, 18-year-old Indian Pragyannananda defeated the US grandmaster in a thrilling tiebreaker. Now Pragyanananda is eyeing the title after defeating Norway's Magnus Carlsen in the final.
