Indian chess player R Vaishali has become the third woman player from the country to win the grandmaster title at Spain's Llobregat Open. Along with this, she along with her brother R Pragnananda became the first brother-sister grandmaster pair in the world. Vaishali achieved this milestone on Friday after crossing 2500 ELO rating points.
He is the 84th Grandmaster (GM) of the country. Koneru Hampi and D Harika are the two other women grandmaster players from India. The 22-year-old Vaishali from Chennai crossed the 2500 ELO rating mark in Spain where she defeated Turkey's Taymar Tarik Celebes in the second round. Vaishali achieved the third GM norm at the Qatar Masters tournament in October and needed to increase her ELO rating.
Pragnananda became the Grandmaster in 2018
Ec Pragananand and Vaishali also became the first brother-sister pair to make it to the qualifying tournament candidates for the World Championship match. The Candidates Tournament will be played in April in Toronto. Vaishali's younger brother Pragnananda received the title of Grandmaster in 2018. He was only 12 years old at that time. Hampi is the youngest female player in the world to win the Grandmaster title. She became a Grandmaster in 2002 at the age of 15.
