IND vs ENG 1st Test : In the first test match played between India and England, the Indian team had to face a crushing defeat by 28 runs. After the match ended, when Indian team captain Rohit Sharma was asked the reason for this defeat, Rohit had no answer. Rohit was asked where team India went wrong? Besides this, Gill replaced Virat Kohli in the batting order. But nothing is gained by merely being a replacement for the big players, one also has to perform like them, which both Gill and Iyer have failed to do.
Players who performed well in domestic cricket on the bench
The good thing is that whatever happened was seen in the first Test itself. India is still trailing 0-1 in the series. There are still 4 Test matches left which means there is a chance to win the series. It's not like the team has no choice. A player like Rajat Patidar is sitting on the bench, who has earned a place in the Indian team by performing well in domestic cricket. It is clear that Gill and Iyer will have to do something if the Indian team is to avoid paying the heavy price of a series defeat.
Gill and Iyer's Test cricket stats are disappointing
Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer's Test cricket statistics are very disappointing. In the first innings of the Hyderabad Test, Gill scored only 23 runs while Iyer had only 35 runs in his account. But when it came time to chase runs, both these players failed to perform well. In the second innings, Gill returned to the pavilion scoring zero and Iyer only 13 runs. Neither Gill nor Iyer has scored a fifty in the last 11 Test innings. Apart from this, Gill's batting average has also dropped below 30. On the other hand, after playing 22 Test innings, Iyer has managed to cross the mark of 50-plus runs only 6 times. Now the time has come to take a firm decision regarding the place of these players in the Indian Test team.
