- India lead 3-1 with a five-wicket victory in the fourth Test
- Gill (52*) and Player of the Match Jurrell (39*) chased down the target of 192 runs
- At one point India came under a lot of pressure when the score was five wickets for 120 runs
Ranchi: India defeated England by five wickets in the fourth Test of the five-Test series today to clinch the series victory with a 3-1 lead. India were tested on the fourth day of play today and at one stage were five wickets short of 120 against a target of 192. Gill hit 52 not out with two sixes in 124 balls and Jurrell, player of the match, wicketkeeper batsman scored 39 not out in 77 balls with two fours. In between, an unbeaten partnership of 72 runs for the sixth wicket gave India a victory by five wickets.
Leading by 40 runs on the third day's play, India lost the wicket of Jaiswal (37) for 84 runs, but with a score of 99 runs for 1, India was marching forward calmly. Rohit Sharma (55) was out on that score.
One more run was added and even though Rajat Patidar was dismissed for 0 after playing six balls, there was no tension in the Indian camp but the 20-year-old right-arm off-spinner Bashir Jadeja (4 off 33 balls) and Sarfraz Khan (0, one ball) were dismissed in two balls. He was assigned to the camp.
India still needed 72 runs to win and if one more wicket fell quickly, India could have lost. England's spinners and fielders were also in a very aggressive mood. Gill, who had been struggling for consistent form in the series, was then joined by Dhruva Jurrell.
In contrast to his aggressive style, Gill took the field by showing footwork against the spinners, earning him a lot of respect. On the other hand, Jurel, who kept England away from a decisive big lead by scoring 90 runs in the first innings, also strongly resisted all the plans of England captain Stokes.
Bashir took 3 wickets for 79 runs.
It felt like India's 40 for no wicket at the end of the third day's play took a lot of work.
Kuldeep Yadav's second innings of four wickets and Ashwin's five wickets were also decisive for the victory as England were bowled out for 145 runs.
