Veteran cricketer Amol Majumdar is all set to become the head coach of the Indian women's cricket team. Yesterday the Cricket Advisory Committee visited the shortlisted candidates in Mumbai. According to reports, Majumdar impressed CAC members Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Pranjpe and Sulakshana Naik with his 90-minute presentation in this interview. Apart from Majumdar, those interviewed included Durham coach John Lewis and Tushar Arothe.
More than 14 thousand runs in Majumdar's domestic cricket
Arothe has previously been the head coach of the women's team. He resigned from this post in the year 2018. The Indian women's cricket team is scheduled to tour Bangladesh this month. The BCCI wants to appoint a coach for Team India first. Romesh Powar was removed from the post of head coach in December last year. Since then the post is vacant. Majumdar has more than 14 thousand runs in domestic cricket.
Majumdar has been the head coach of the Mumbai Ranji team
A BCCI official said, "CAC was most impressed with Amol's presentation. He was very clear about his plans for the women's team. Other presentations were also good, but Majumdar was the best. He will be recommended for the post." Majumdar has also been the head coach of the Mumbai Ranji team and has also worked with IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals and the South African national team. He was the only person who personally appeared before the CAC during the interview. If Majumdar is selected as the head coach, his first assignment will be the Bangladesh tour starting on July 9. The Indian women's team will play three T20Is and an ODI in Mirpur. Team India has lost some important matches despite being in good form in the last five years. Also, no one has won the World Cup yet.
Majumdar's contract could be for two years
Majumdar is likely to get a two-year contract. Meanwhile, he will lead Team India in the World Cup to be held in Bangladesh next year. The T20 World Cup will be played in Bangladesh in September-October next year. Earlier this year, Team India lost to Australia in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup despite being in a position to win. Considering the Indian team's inability to finish the knock-out matches on a positive note, the new head coach's task will be to improve the physical fitness of the players as well as work on the mental toughness.
The ODI World Cup will be held in India in 2025
Apart from the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh next year, India will host the Women's ODI World Cup in September 2025. Majumdar scored 11,167 runs at an average of 48.13 in 171 matches in first-class cricket. He scored 3286 runs at an average of 38.20 in 113 matches in List-A. He scored 174 runs in 14 T20 matches. However, despite scoring so many runs, he could never make it to the Indian team. He has also scored 30 centuries, 60 fifties in first class, three centuries and 26 fifties in List-A, one fifty in T20s.
