Pragyanananda will face the five-time champion
In today's final, Pragyannananda will now take on five-time champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway, who defeated Azerbaijan's Nijat Abasov 1.5-0.5 in the semi-finals. After Pragyanananda Anand, he is the second Indian to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup. He has also qualified for the Candidates Tournament in 2024, which will decide Ding Liren's challenger.
Third youngest player to qualify for the Candidates Tournament
Pragyanananda is the third youngest player to qualify for the Candidates tournament after veterans Bucky Fisher and Carlson. After entering the final, Pragyanananda said, “I did not expect to play against Magnus in this tournament because I could only play against him in the final and I did not expect to reach the final. I will try my best and see what happens. "It's a great feeling to qualify for the Candidates Tournament," he said.
Viswanathan Anand praised
India's greatest chess player Viswanathan Anand posted on 'X' (Twitter), 'Preg (Pragnananda) reaches final! He defeated Fabiano Caruana in a tiebreak and will now face Magnus Carlsen. What a great performance!' Pragyanananda has been in very good form in the current World Cup and had also beaten American world number two Hikaru Nakamura before Caruana.
