Para powerlifter Sudhir has created history at the Commonwealth Games. He became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal for India in para powerlifting (weightlifting for disabled athletes). Earlier in 2014, powerlifter Sakina Khato won bronze medal. Sudhir won the gold medal in the men's heavy weight category by lifting 212 kg.
Sudhir, weighing 87.30 kg, lifted 208 kg in his first attempt with rack height 14. In the second attempt, he lifted 212 kg. Along with lifting 212 kg, Sudhir also created a new Games record. In his final attempt, Sudhir failed to lift 217 kg. However, Sudhir remained on top with 134.5 points and won the gold medal.
India's sixth gold
This is India's sixth Birmingham Commonwealth Games medal. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu, Jeremy Lalrinunga and Achinta Shewli have won gold medals in weightlifting. While women's loan ball team and men's tabral tennis team have also got gold medals.
This is becoming India's 20th medal in total. It includes 6 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze medals. India is ranked seventh in the medal race.

The 27-year-old Sudhir opened the medal tally for India in para sports at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games with a gold medal. In the men's heavy weight category, Nigeria's Ikechukwu Christian Obichukwu won the silver medal with 133.6 points, while Scotland's Mickey Yule won the bronze medal with 130.0 points.
Sudhir had earlier bagged a bronze medal in the men's 88kg weight category at the World Para Powerlifting Asia-Oceania Open Championship in South Korea in June with a best lift of 214kg. Besides, Sudhir has also qualified for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games.

Athletes are given 3 attempts in powerlifting. Points are awarded based on body weight and technique for lifting weights. A physically lighter player gets more points than others for lifting the same weight. Sudhir fell victim to polio at the age of 5. Then in 2013, he started powerlifting to keep himself healthy.
